  • Introduction

Your Accu-Chek Combo insulin delivery system offers many functions that allow you to customize the system to match your needs. These include the ability to:

    • Adjust the Bolus Increment for the Quick Bolus
    • Adjust the Prime Amount needed to fill an infusion set
    • Lock your basal rate profiles for added protection
    • Activate the Automatic Off function, a safety feature that stops insulin delivery

This lesson shows you how to adjust your Therapy Settings to meet your requirements.

  • Goals

At the end of this lesson you will know how to:

    • Adjust the Bolus Increment
    • Adjust the Prime Amount
    • Lock your basal rate profiles
    • Activate the Automatic Off function

Let's start with adjusting the Bolus Increment.

  • Adjusting the Bolus increment

As you have seen earlier, your pump can deliver different types of boluses. To accomodate a wide range of insulin dose requirements, the bolus increment for the Quick Bolus of your pump is adjustable. It is initially set to 0.5 units per key-press, but it can be changed to 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 units. Let's see how.

If you would like to review the different types of boluses that can be delivered by your pump, click here.

  • Adjusting the prime amount

The Prime Amount needed to fill an infusion set depends on the length of the infusion set tubing. The shorter your infusion set tubing, the less insulin will be required to prime/fill the infusion set. For information on the Prime Amount required for your infusion set, refer to instructions for use provided with the set. The default setting for the Prime Amount is 25 units of U100 insulin. But, this can be changed as required for specific infusion sets. It's easy!

  • Locking Basal Rate Profiles

Your Accu-Chek Combo insulin delivery system allows you to adapt your basal rate profile as needed.

You can then lock your basal rate profiles. This provides additional protection against accidental changes to the basal rate during normal pump operation. If the basal rate lock is set to ON, programming of the basal rate profiles 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 is blocked. If you try to program a basal rate while the basal rate lock is turned ON, a key symbol in the basal rate total screen indicates that basal rate programming is locked. The Icon and Icon functions to increase or decrease your rate are blocked. However, you can still change between the different Basal Rate profiles 1 to 5. Let's now review the steps required for locking basal rate profiles.

  • Automatic off function

AUTOMATIC OFF is a safety feature that stops insulin delivery and triggers Error E3: AUTOMATIC OFF if no pump keys are pressed, or pump functions via the diabetes manager are not activated within a programmed time period in RUN mode. This feature can either be set to OFF or programmed up to 24 hours in 1-hour intervals. The factory setting is OFF. Discuss the circumstances when you might use this feature with your doctor or healthcare team. Let's see how to set it.
